I am an incoming assistant professor at the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, the Ohio State University starting in January 2025. My laboratory will combine high-throughput microfluidics-based directed evolution and single-molecule techniques to develop novel molecular probes, enzymes, and light-harvesting antenna complexes.
If you are interested in joining my group as a postdoc, graduate, or undergraduate student, please send me an email with your CV at premashis.manna@weizmann.ac.il
Biography
Currently, I am a senior postdoc fellow in Haran Lab at Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel working at the intersection of single-molecule spectroscopy and plasmonics. Previously, I was a postdoctoral scholar in Schlau-Cohen lab at MIT from 2018-2022. There, I investigated natural photosynthesis at the single-molecule level. I obtained my Ph.D. (2017) from the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, University of Colorado at Boulder under the guidance of Ralph Jimenez and Amy Palmer. At Boulder, I employed a multi-parametric microfluidic platform for the directed evolution of the photophysical properties of red fluorescent proteins (RFPs). I completed my M.Sc. (2012) and B.Sc. (2010) in Chemistry from IIT Kanpur and Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Belur, respectively.
I am an associate editor of Good Morning Science, an online journal that publishes articles on popular science. The aim of this journal is to bridge the gap between science and the general public. I am associated with a non-profit organization called Swajan, which operates in rural West Bengal, India. The organization supports meritorious students with a low economic background to reach their full potential. I co-started a YouTube channel (The Molecular Kitchen) where I talk about the science of cooking and also science in general. I spend my leisure time playing with my son, reading popular science books, writing stories in Bengali, or occasional historical expedition...
I investigate protein dynamics using single-molecule techniques and tune their properties for desired functions.
I discuss the chemistry involved in cooking and everyday objects in my YouTube channel. Also talk about science in general.
I regularly write popular science articles to spread scientific temper and awareness among general public.
